Samsung Solve for Tomorrow
Power Up Design with AI
Go straight to…
Overview
AI isn’t just the future – it’s already here. From summarising research to testing ideas, AI helps designers work faster and smarter. But here’s the truth: AI is a tool, not a replacement for your brain.
It can help you get started, explore options and write things up quickly – but the best ideas still come from you. In real-world design, professionals use AI to analyse feedback, generate options and simulate user experiences, while keeping human judgment at the centre.

| Challenge: | Renewable energies, like wind and solar, are better for the environment than fossil fuels. But they can’t be generated all the time – only when the sun is out or the wind is blowing. This can make it challenging to use greener power sources. |
| Solution: | Team Optimum won Samsung Solve for Tomorrow in 2024 by creating a solution that makes fluctuating renewable energy reliable.
Their app uses AI to schedule when devices consume power, making sure they use renewable energy when it’s available. Their advice for other young people? “Definitely enter [Solve for Tomorrow], just throw yourself at it. Any ideas you’ve had you can use, even if you think well, is this good enough yet, is it not? It will grow through the competition so much to something new.” |
Top tips for using AI to help you come up with ideas
AI can boost your creativity – if you use it wisely. Here’s how:
Start with your own thinking
- Have a go yourself first – don’t let AI shape your ideas too early
- Use AI to build on your ideas, not replace them
Write better prompts
- Be specific – explain your idea, audience and goal
- Add context – upload background info if allowed
- Ask for UK English and en dashes – it shows you’ve thought about style
Check facts
- AI can sound confident but get things wrong
- Ask for sources and verify them yourself
- For serious research, compare with trusted sites or libraries
Think critically
- Don’t accept the first answer – improve it
- Spot what doesn’t make sense and fix it
- Ask: Does this match the brief? Is it original?
Use AI for practical tasks
- Summarise research or documents
- Generate name ideas for your project
- Suggest extra tech types – but keep your solution simple
- Proofread your entry – but rewrite in your own words
Quick checklist for your idea
- Did you use AI to speed up, not replace your thinking?
- Is your idea original and clear?
- Have you fact-checked everything?

“AI is great at tasks that enhance efficiency and productivity. It aids engineers by automating repetitive tasks, which enhances productivity by allowing them to focus on more complex and creative aspects of their work. AI contributes to automation through:
This saves time and reduces the likelihood of human error, leading to more reliable and efficient engineering processes. However, there are still areas where humans excel and AI struggles to match us, like creativity and innovation, complex problem solving, communication and project management.” |
